Wednesday is a Holy Day of Obligation – the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary when we celebrate that Mary was taken body and soul into Heaven.

The idea that a person may be bodily assumed into Heaven is from Scripture. Enoch, Elijah, and those who came out of the tomb at Christ’s death were all assumed into Heaven before the general resurrection (Matthew 27:52-53). Christians believe that one day we will all be raised and then caught up to be with Jesus forever (1 Thessalonians 4:17). As the first person to say “œyes” to the good news of Jesus, Mary received the blessings we will all be given.

And that Mary was assumed into Heaven makes sense. As the body of Christ came from her body, it is fitting that she should share his lot. Mary played a significant role in the redemptive work of her son and thus should attain its full fruit.

The Catholic Church was commissioned by Jesus to teach all nations and to teach them infallibly ““ guided, as he promised, by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, if the Church teaches something as true, it comes from God and can be trusted as true.
